In 2017, Primary 7 pupils submitted their entries to Poppyscotland’s competition, ‘Poppy Places and Spaces’. This competition offered children an opportunity to explore the question “Why is it important to remember?” by designing an area for remembrance and reflection in their school or the local community in this year, the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The highest number of votes will determine the winner, who will then have the unique opportunity of building their Poppy Place or Space with the help of Poppyscotland!
Poppy Places and Spaces was open to all school-age children in Scotland so we are very proud to announce that Primary 7D have been shortlisted for their incredibly well thought-out submission!
So what is Primary 7D’s idea? Well, Marc McCann (who designed the class’s entry) explains all: ‘my idea for the Poppy Places and Spaces competition is a transparent, Perspex box, 7ft in height, containing a 6 foot poppy made of thousands of tiny poppies. These poppies will represent the many service people who died in the wars. The box will be placed on the Low Green, outside my school, facing both east and west, so that the sun can be seen rising and setting through the Perspex. The base will be black and the following will be printed in gold lettering: ‘At the rising of the sun and at its going down, we remember them’.
The winner will be decided by public vote so you can play your part in securing this wonderful place of Remembrance for Ayr. Please encourage every member of your family to vote and remember: voting closes on the 11th of May!
