STANDARD GRADE
Course Content
The broad aim of the course is to indicate the contribution science can make to society and to the pupils' own wellbeing and secondly to emphasis the importance of scientific investigation as a means of solving problems in everyday life.
Standard Grade Science consists of four compulsory topics; this will give pupils studying this course a broad scientific understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There will be an opportunity for pupils to work with the school environmental committee on suitable projects.
- Health & Safe Living
Healthy lungs, heart & blood, fit for life.
- Introduction to Materials
Classification, uses and properties of materials, Extending the range of materials, the shape and strength of structures, flammability, damage to and protection of materials.
- Energy & its uses
Energy in the home, Electrical safety in the home, non-renewable sources of energy, alternative sources of energy, renewable sources of energy.
- Enviromental Studies
Energy from the sun for living things, food chains and food webs, interdependence and populations, production and recycling of household waste, pollution, adapting the environment to human needs, conservation.
Folio/Project Work
As with the discrete science subjects, students have to carry out a number of practical techniques. Students also have to complete two investigations. These have to be written up and submitted for internal assessment.
Course Assessment
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed by two external exams at the end of the two-year course. However, unlike Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are only offered at General and Credit, Standard Grade Science is offered at all three levels (F, G & C). Depending on individual pupils, they will sit either the General and Foundation examination or the General and Credit examination. Standard Grade Science can challenge able pupils but also offer support and allow success for pupils of lower academic attainment. Each element (KU and PS) is graded and an overall grade for the course is awarded.
