ADVANCED HIGHER
Entry Level:
Higher Music at A or B preferred.
Summary of Course Content
The Course consists of three Units.
- Performing
You will have the opportunity to select and perform music, as a soloist or in a group from a wide range of styles or periods.
- Listening
You will develop a more in-depth knowledge of musical concepts learned at Higher level and your ability to analyse, understand, enjoy and communicate through music will be enhanced.
An Inventing Unit will also be undertaken that will build on your skills learned at higher level.
You will develop the ability to create a well-structured composition(s) using a variety of musical techniques.
Course Assessment
Internal Assessment will consist of:
- Performing
Candidates will be assessed on a performance programme on one instrument lasting 15 minutes and a performance programme on a different instrument lasting 10 minutes. Both instruments will require a minimum standard of Associated Board level Grade 5.
- Listening
Candidates will be assessed throughout the Unit by an assessor observation checklist recording the achievement of Outcomes and Performance criteria and in particular the process leading to the production of a Commentary on two or more musical works/movements.
External Assessment will consist of:
- Performing
This will be assessed by an external examiner who will sample and assess approximately 10 minutes from a prepared programme of 15 minutes on one instrument/voice. The programme must contain at least 2 contrasting pieces.
The examiner will also sample and assess approximately 6 minutes from a prepared programme of 10 minutes on a second instrument. The programme must contain at least 2 contrasting pieces.
- Listening
Candidates will be assessed in the course of a question paper with a time limit of 1 hour which tests knowledge and understanding of musical concepts and musical literacy.
Folio/Project Work
Inventing will be assessed by submission of 2 compositions with programme notes, a score and audio recording lasting a minimum of 1 minute 30 seconds each. This will be internally assessed and externally moderated as a Pass/Fail Unit.
