
Course Content
The Standard Grade course consists of four units of study;
UNIT 1: Living in a Democracy
UNIT 2: Changing Society
UNIT 3: Ideologies
UNIT 4: International Relations
In Unit 1 all aspects of government, local, Scottish and
national, in the UK are examined. This will include the development
of knowledge and understanding in the following areas: participation
in a democratic society, political representation and rights
and responsibilities of citizens within society.
In Unit 2 issues such as Unemployment, Family Life and the
Needs of the Elderly are topics, which are studied in detail.
In Unit 3 the ideology and culture of a country such as the
USA, China or Russia are examined with regard to the country’s
political system, social structure and economy.
In Unit 4 the wider world issues encompassed by international
relations are addressed in the study of topics such as aid
to developing countries, the benefits of membership of NATO,
the EU and the United Nations and how these organisations
are structured and how they function.
The Standard Grade course aims to develop pupil’s knowledge
and understanding of events and situations in the UK and the
world today. The course helps the pupil to examine evidence,
debate issues and form opinions of their own. These are skills,
which will be useful in many aspects of life.

Course Assessment
Pupils are assessed on the following skills at the end of
each topic: knowledge and understanding and enquiry skills.
All elements – Knowledge and Understanding and Enquiry
Skills are assessed by an external examination, set and marked
by the SQA.
