Entry Level:
Some experience of Media Studies.
Course Content
This course is made up of two units:
Unit 1 - Analysis: This unit involves the analysis in depth
of a range of media texts, describing in detail their relationship
to social, institutional and audience contexts.
Unit 2 - Production: This unit involves contributing to a
group media production.
Assessment
There are two forms: internal and external.
External: 1. Examination of 1 hour 30 minutes. It will consist
of two sections: Analysis and Production, containing a range
of questions in each section. Candidates will attempt two
questions, one from each section.
External: 2. Unseen Analysis. This consists of one essay
written in school, under exam conditions, analysing a previously
unseen text.
Internal: Unit 1. Two essays, written in school under exam
conditions, providing detailed analysis of two texts, fiction
and non-fiction.
Internal: Unit 2. Continuous assessment of the contribution
made to the planning and implementation of a media production,
and one essay written under exam conditions which evaluates
the production process.

HIGHER
Entry Level:
Media Studies at Intermediate 2 level or equivalent or English
Standard Grade at 1 or 2.
Course Content
The course is made up of two units, both of which are internally
assessed.
Unit 1 – Analysis: This unit involves the analysis
in depth of a range of media texts, describing in detail their
relationship to social, institutional and audience contexts.
Unit 2 – Production: This unit involves contributing
to a group media production in a single medium, targeted at
a specific audience.
Assessment
There are two forms of assessment: internal and external.
External: i) Examination of two hours duration. It will consist
of two sections, Analysis and Production, containing a range
of questions in each section. Candidates will attempt two
questions, one drawn from each section.
External: ii) Unseen Analysis. Candidates will be required
to demonstrate the analytical skills of two of the six outcomes
(Categories and Language). This will take place in school
under controlled conditions.
Internal: Unit 1 – Analysis of the six key aspects:
Categories, Language, Audience, Narrative, Representation
and Institutions, in two essays written in school under exam
conditions.
Internal: Unit 2 – Continuous assessment of the contribution
made to the planning and implementation of the group production,
and one essay written under exam conditions which evaluates
the production process.
