ADVANCED HIGHER MATHEMATICS

Entry Level:
Higher Mathematics preferably at Grade A or B

Summary of Course Content
This course is made up of three Units.  It builds on knowledge acquired in the Higher Course.

Unit AH1:   Algebra, Differentiation, Integration, Functions, Gaussian Elimination.

Unit AH2:   Further Differentiation, Further Integration, Complex Numbers, Sequences & Series, Number Theory.

Unit AH3:   Vectors, Ordinary Differential Equations, Further Sequences & Series, Matrices, Further Number Theory.

Assessment & Examinations
Each Unit will be assessed internally by means of outcome tests, Unit tests and end of Unit extension tests.

The external exam to determine grades A, B or C is one paper of 3 hours duration.

Pupils must pass all the Unit tests and the external exam to gain a course award.

None required.

NOTE:   a TI83  Graphics Calculator will be needed for this course.




ADVANCED HIGHER APPLIED MATHEMATICS: MECHANICS

Entry Level:
Higher Mathematics grade A, Higher Physics grade A/B.
Pupils must also take Advanced Higher Mathematics.

Summary of Course Content
This course is made up of three Units.  It builds on knowledge acquired in the Higher Course.

Unit M1:
Motion in a Straight Line; Position, Velocity and Acceleration Vectors including Relative Motion; Motion of Projectiles in a Vertical Plane; Forces and Newton's Laws of Motion.

Unit M2:
Motion in a Horizontal Circle; Simple Harmonic Motion; Principles of Momentum and Impulse; Principles of Work, Energy and Power; Motion in a Straight Line, where the solution of first order differential equations is required.

Unit MAM:
Algebra, Matrix Algebra, Differentiation, Integration, Ordinary Differential Equations
