HIGHER
Entry Level:
Standard Grade Latin, Grades 1, 2, or 3.
Summary of Course Content
There are three units, two on Interpretation and one on Translation.
The skills required are an extension of those for Standard
Grade. Each Interpretation Unit has a prescribed text, partly
in Latin and party in English as at Standard Grade. The prose
prescription is taken from Speech V of Cicero’s prosecution
of the corrupt and greedy governor of Sicily, Verres. The
verse prescription is taken from Book VI of Virgil’s
Aeneid in which the hero makes a journey through the Land
of the Dead. The passage set for translation is a narrative
passage taken from the works of Cicero.
Assessment & Examinations
Each candidate is required to complete a folio of internally
assessed tests, one for each of the interpretation units and
one for the translation unit, each lasting one hour. The external
assessment consists of one paper testing interpretation of
the prescribed texts and one paper testing translation. Each
of the three units has equal value in the production of an
overall grade.
Folio/Project Work:
None required.
