Course Content
Latin pupils in Third Year will continue to use the Cambridge Course, building up their knowledge of the language and their skills of analysis, deduction and interpretation. At the same time, pupils will investigate aspects of Roman civilisation, which interest them. The work in Fourth Year is more closely determined by the needs of the Standard Grade examination. The class will study a booklet of excerpts from real Latin authors, mainly in Latin but with some in English. These passages deal with, among other topics, gladiators, love and friendship. Further practice in translation is gained by considering a wider variety of passages of Latin.

Folio/Project Work
Pupils have to submit for external assessment the result of an individual investigation into a topic of their own choosing by the end of March in their Fourth Year. This is worth one fifth of the overall grade.

Course Assessment
The Latin examination consists of two elements. The interpretation paper is set on the prescribed texts, which have been studied. A copy of the booklet is provided in the examination. The second element is translation. This is in the form of an unseen passage, which is accompanied by a word list specific to that passage.
