
Course Content
The Standard Grade course consists of three units of study;
UNIT 1: Changing Life in Scotland and Britain (1830 –
1930)
UNIT 2: International Co-operation and Conflict (1890 –
1920s)
UNIT 3: People and Power: Russia (1914 – 41)
In Unit 1 a variety of themes, relating to social, economic
and political changes in Scotland and Britain are examined.
Topics covered include population and migration, living and
working conditions, health and housing and the struggle for
democracy.
In Unit 2 the era of the First World War and its aftermath
is considered. Areas examined include the crises leading to
war, the experience of war and its effect on soldiers and
civilians and the search for peace and security after the
war.
In Unit 3 Russia in a period of conflict and change is studied.
Themes covered are the Tsarist Government, the 1917 Revolutions
and the rule of Lenin and Stalin.
The Standard Grade Course aims to develop in pupils a way
of thinking about the past by examining the main ideas in
a defined period of history through the study of evidence
provided by books, films, museum collections, maps, documents,
photographs and outside visits, reinforced by factual knowledge.
Folio/Project Work
There is no folio/project work required in the course.
Course Assessment
Pupils are assessed on the 2 elements of Knowledge and Understanding
and Enquiry Skills. Throughout the Course pupils will undertake
regular topic based assessments. External Assessment is offered
at Foundation, General and Credit levels with examination
papers of 1 hour, 1½ and 1¾ hours respectively.
