Course Content
The course involves developing skills in three areas

Reading
This includes reading and analysing fiction and non-fiction print texts and some mass media texts. Students will do close reading exercises and will write extended responses to texts of different genres.

Writing
Students will write essays of different types: informative, discursive, personal and specific literary form.

Talking
Students will take part in group discussion and will deliver
solo talks.

Folio
At the end of fourth year, the student will send off to the SQA a folio of reading and writing for external assessment. This must include two pieces of writing, and three extended responses to literature.

Assessment and Examinations

  • All talking is assessed internally by the class teacher.
  • Close reading and writing are assessed by examination. In S3 this takes place in May; students will do one close reading exercise and one writing exercise. In S4, this takes place in January (the prelim) and in April/May (SQA exams); students will sit two close reading exercises (either Foundation and General, or General and Credit) and one writing exercise which covers all three levels.
  • Extended response and writing are assessed as part of the folio.
