The aims of the course are to develop the abilities of reading writing, talking and listening and to encourage an enjoyment, appreciation and understanding of literature and the television, radio and newspaper media. Poetry, prose, drama and media texts will be studied in class, and pupils will be encouraged to read privately; book reviews are set regularly.

Pupils are set according to ability so that they can be in a class where they will receive challenge and encouragement appropriate to their level of attainment. This is reviewed twice, in October and May.
