Wellington School pupils are once again involved in an exciting European collaboration, a Comenius project entitled ''Through and Beyond the Iron Curtain".  Comenius aims to promote cooperation and friendship amongst European pupils and is funded by the European Union.

This project has encouraged pupils throughout the Senior School to examine life on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the 1960s.

In January 2009, Wellington Headmaster Mr Parlour and Mrs Coontz, Principal Teacher of Modern Languages, travelled to Munich to meet staff from schools in France, Germany, Hungary and Slovenia and discuss arrangements for the project.

The first pupil meetings took place in 2009 when French senior pupils from St Louis in Saumur, here in Ayr on the rugby exchange, met with Wellington Primary 7 pupils to translate the summaries of their Comenius 1960s group projects. These presentations on various aspects of British life in the 1960s were then filmed and sent to other participating schools in Europe.

Much of the work has been done using e-mail, but there have also been several opportunities to meet face-to-face (where all the conferences are held in the official working language of the project, French). Mrs Coontz and Mrs Newall attended meetings in Ljubljana, Slovenia in October 2010. Some of the pupils involved in the project met in Hungary in April 2010, and Wellington hosted the Comenius participants from the four other countries here in Scotland in October 2010. Dr Matthias Baer from the Edith-Stein-Gymnasium in Munich is the Comenius Project coordinator, and the Comenius group will be meeting for the last time in Germany in May 2011. The group will visit Berlin and Munich.

Working groups of pupils and staff have been set up and senior pupils gave a presentation to the school on European Day of Languages.

There are plenty of opportunities for Wellington pupils to perfect their language skills whilst getting a taste of other cultures, with regular exchanges to France and Germany in addition to foreign trips for culture, sport and international conferences. Wellington also prepares pupils for the UCAPE European Diploma. The school has recently been awarded International School status by the British Council.
