Higher Chemistry

Summary of Course Content
The course consists of four units:

Electronic Structure and the Periodic Table (20 hrs)
Spectroscopy, Covalent and Ionic Bonding, Superconductors, Semiconductors, Transition metal complexes.

Principles of Chemical Reactions (40 hrs)
Chemical analysis, Equilibrium, Indicators, Thermochemistry, Kinetics

Organic Chemistry (40 hrs)
Halogenoalkanes, Alcohols, Ethers, Aldehydes and Ketones, Amines, Aromatics, Stereoisomerism, Mass IR and NMR Spectroscopy, Medicines.

Chemical Investigation (20 hrs)

Candidates carry out 12 Prescribed Practical Activities, Unit 1 has two, and Units 2 and 3 have five each. One from each unit must be written up in class under supervision. The others are written up since knowledge of them is required in the exam. The best report would be retained for the exam board.

Assessment & Examinations
Units 1, 2 and 3 require the candidate to pass a NAB test.
External assessment consists of a 2 ½ hour examination


Folio/Project Work:
The Chemical Investigation – candidates are required to maintain a lab notebook as they investigate a chemistry topic.
A write up of 2500 words is submitted to the exam board detailing the project and the results obtained.
