Entry Level:
Standard Grade Chemistry at Credit level.
Summary of Course Content
The course is made up of three units.
ENERGY MATTERS:
Reaction rate; enthalpy; patterns in the periodic table bonding;
the mole.
WORLD OF CARBON:
Fuels and hydrocarbons; petrol and products; hydrogen economy;
systematic naming of organic chemicals; different functional
groups; modern polymers; protein structure; fats, oils and
esters.
CHEMICAL REACTIONS:
The chemical industry; redox reactions; electrochemistry;
pH; nuclear chemistry; Hess’ Law; Equilibrium.
Candidates carry out 3 prescribed practical activities for
each unit. The results of these must be completed and written
up in class under supervision. One report per unit must be
retained for the exam board.
Assessment & Examinations
Topic Tests are carried out internally, twice per unit. Units
1, 2 + 3 requires the candidate to pass a NAB test. External
assessment consists of a 2 ½ hour examination.
