Course Content
The Standard Grade Chemistry course aims to make pupils aware
of the chemical basis of the world around them – for
example, food, clothes and the environment are all results
of chemistry in action. The course also aims to show something
of the contribution of chemistry to the quality of every day
life, for example, in searching for better fuels and for better
medicines, in fighting against corrosion, in developing and
improving substances to help crops grow and in producing plastics
and other useful materials. It is important for pupils to
be aware of the problems of pollution caused by misusing materials
and the dangers of squandering resources. A proper awareness
of these problems and dangers, along with possible solutions,
can only be gained through a study of chemistry.
The course provides a sound basis for further study, for
training or for work. It is available only at the two upper
Levels of Standard Grade: General and Credit.
Knowledge of chemistry is not gained for its own sake; it
is put to use in practical work and in solving chemical problems.
Practical work has an essential place in the course and acts
as a stimulus to interest and enjoyment.

Course Assessment
Work is assessed on performance in the following
course elements:
• Knowledge and
Understanding
• Problem solving
• Practical Abilities
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed
by written examinations, set and marked by the Scottish Examination
Board. Pupils normally attempt the questions at both General
and Credit Levels.
Performance in Practical Abilities is assessed by the teacher,
with assessment standards checked by the Board.
