STANDARD GRADE
Standard Grade Chemistry provides an excellent training for many careers, both scientific and non-scientific. The study of Chemistry promotes the development of transferable skills such as: problem solving, analytical thinking, numeracy, practical skills and co-operation with others. These skills are much sought after in many occupations and fields of employment.
Course Content
Fifteen topics are studied during S3 and S4.
Topic Title
- Chemical Reactions
- Speed of Reactions
- Atoms and the Periodic Table
- How atoms combine
- Fuels
- Structures and Reactions of Hydrocarbons
- Properties of Substances
- Acids and Alkalis
- Reactions of Acids
- Making Electricity
- Metals
- Corrosion
- Plastics and Synthetic Fibres
- Fertilisers
- Carbohydrates and Related Substances
Standard Grade Chemistry is only available at General Level (Grades 3 and 4) and Credit level (Grades 1 and 2). The course links well with either Biology or Physics at this level.
Folio/Project Work:
Pupils must carry out five Practical Techniques and two Practical Investigations. These are all assessed internally and a Practical Abilities grade is awarded.
Course Assessment
Class tests are taken periodically throughout the year to monitor progress and inform reports. These tests mirror the format of the S.Q.A. national exam.
External Assessment
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed by two external exams lasting one and a half hours at the end of the two-year course. One exam is at General level and the other at Credit level. Pupils usually sit both exams. Upon successful completion of the course, pupils can progress to Higher Chemistry.
