Entry Level:
Standard Grade Business Management at General level.
Summary of Course Content
The course is made up of two units:
• Business
Enterprise - 40 hours
• Business Decision
Areas - 80 hours
The Business Enterprise unit considers how businesses operate
in the economy with reference to all types of organisation,
in both the public and private sector. It considers the objectives
of organisations and the factors, which affect their operation,
such as finance, government policies, the EU, pressure groups,
competition and the environment. The role of IT in business
is also considered in this unit.
Business Decision Areas relates to the study of the main
business functions – Marketing, Finance, Human Resources
and Operations. These areas are related wherever possible
to real examples from local enterprises.
Assessment & Examinations
Internal assessment will be carried out during the course
with a series of end of topic tests. These assessments must
all be passed to gain a course award. The external assessment
will be a written paper of 1 ¾ hours duration. It will
be divided into 2 sections – the first will be in the
form of an interpretation (based on a short case study) and
worth 25 marks and the second will be 2 extended answers,
from a choice of 5, worth 25 marks each.

HIGHER
Entry Level:

Summary of Course Content
The course is made up of two units:

The Business Enterprise unit considers how businesses operate
in the economy with reference to all types of organisation,
in both the public and private sector. It considers the objectives
of organisations and the factors, which affect their operation,

is also considered in this unit.
Business Decision Areas relates to the study of the main
business functions – Marketing, Finance, Human Resources
and Operations. These areas are studied in considerable detail,
relating wherever possible to real examples from local enterprises.
Assessment & Examinations
Internal assessment will be carried out during the course
with 3 end of topic tests in the Business Enterprise unit
and 5 in the Business Decision unit. These assessments must
all be passed to gain a course award. The external assessment
will be based on a written paper of 2 ½ hours duration.
It will be divided into 2 sections each worth 50 marks. The
first section will be a case study and the second will involve
2 essays from a choice of 5. This external exam will determine
the grade of the award (A,B or C).
