Entry Level:
Standard Grade Art and Design at General level.

Summary of Course Content
The course is made up of three 40 hour units.

EXPRESSIVE ACTIVITY:
Students identify a theme or themes of personal interest such as portraiture, still life, landscape, figure and the built environment and carry out a detailed visual investigation.

DESIGN ACTIVITY:
Students identify a design brief of personal interest such as fashion, visual communication, textile, interior, environmental or product design and undertake a substantial investigation that addresses design requirements and constraints.

ART AND DESIGN STUDIES:
Students research and investigate relevant selected areas of the visual arts and design in historical and contemporary contexts.

In addition, there is a requirement for students to demonstrate the breadth and balance of their experience across the whole course by:

  • Undertaking work in 2 and 3 dimensional media
  • Using technology
  • Studying the work of Artist and Designers in a contemporary context.

Assessment & Examinations
The course is assessed externally in the three following ways:

THE COURSE REVIEW:
Students submit two separate but complementary folios drawn from best work in Expressive Activity and Design Activity.

THE PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT:
A three-hour practical examination during which students develop alternative approaches to previously explored stimulus from course work.

THE ART AND DESIGN STUDIES EXAMINATION:
A one-hour written examination, which will assess contextual aspects of visual, Art and Design from course work.

The balance of the marks is as follows:
Course review 70%; Practical Assignment 15%;
Art and Design Studies Examination 15%.
