Course Content
The course is divided into three activities, Expressive, Design and Critical. Each pupil produces work based on personal investigation within the context of a given theme, and relates their own work to that of other artists and designers, past and contemporary.

Expressive Activity
While researching a theme through drawing, Photography, painting, etc. pupils are encouraged to explore a variety of materials and techniques. This initial research is developed towards a final expressive work.

Design Activity
Working from a given design brief, pupils follow a logical process developing ideas through stages of research and investigation, consideration of possibilities, production and evaluation.

Critical Activity
Pupils produce a piece of written/illustrated work related to each of the practical activities in the course. This should be a mixture of opinion and personal judgements backed by facts about artists and designers and their working methods.

Folio/Project work
Class work, homework and sketchbooks for the practical activities of the course generate over two years large and varied folios that show development of skills and areas of personal interest within Art and Design.

Course Assessment
In the second year of the course the Design Activity is assessed internally and moderated by the SQA and the Expressive and the Critical activities are assessed externally.
