S2 /S3 RUGBY LOOKING GOOD (07/03/2010)
The S2/S3 rugby team had to defend against some spirited work by Queen Victoria School, but always looked very dangerous in attack.
Wellington always knew that it was going to be a very tough game against Queen Victoria, but all the boys played really well and were able to beat a very strong team.
Wellington started brightly and a quickly taken penalty resulted in Huw Gallocher smashing through the sleepy Queen Victoria defence. Ollie Craig converted with ease. Wellington were always on the front foot, and Ollie rounded the weak QueenVictoria defence for his first of 4 tries. Queen Victoria then found their feet and Huw Gallocher was forced to make a try-saving tackle when he smashed Queen Victoria out to touch. Then a solo run by Ollie, who scored his second try by going past four tackles with ease, and putting the ball down under the posts.
Jamie Mack scored his first try of the game when he rounded the flat-footed defence and put the ball down, then scored his second, seconds after his first. Jamie ran from inside our own half, showing great stamina, to score the try of the match. Then we scored our last try of the half when Rory Boyle picked the ball up from a ruck and dived over the line. The score at the interval was 22-0 to Wellington.
Try number seven was Ollie\'s third, when a strong solo run was rewarded when he went straight through and put the ball down under the posts. Then, Chris Rae intercepted a looping pass, and ran from the halfway line to the 5 metre line before being tackled, and of course Ollie the try thief, stole my try!
Johnny Lewis scored his first try of the match, when excellent team work and first class support set him up to dive under the posts.
However, Wellington were caught being cocky when two very quick Queen Victoria tries and conversions baffled the rock solid defence. Then on the last play of the game, the impressive Jack Preston, had a solo run and dived under the posts. Ollie converted and that brought the tally to Wellington 37 - Queen Victoria 7.
A superb result for Wellington and for the first time in years, our coach David Courtney was speechless!
Man of the Match, after a team vote, went to Ollie Craig. Well done Ollie!
