ELECTION TIME AT WELLINGTON (23/01/2010)
S1 Held a mock election overseen by guests Provost Winnie Sloan and Phil Gallie on Thursday.
The picture shows Phil Gallie (former MP for Ayr 1992-97 and MSP for South of Scotland), Rosalyn Thomson (SNP candidate), Jade Pryde (Labour candidate), Kenneth Manderson (Conservative candidate), and Winnifred Sloan (Provost of South Ayrshire Council).
The winner, announced on Monday, was Kenneth Manderson representing the Conservative Party. The winning margin, established after a recount, was just one vote.
Provost Sloan commended the pupils on their work and the importance of becoming involved in local and national issues.
Mr Gallie emphasised the importance of democracy and of exercising our democratic rights, mentioning in particular the fight through history to obtain equal rights for women in voting. He commended the candidates on their very effective and appropriate campaign messages which emphasised both national and local issues. Return to News Headlines > |
