SUCCESS FOR 1ST XV VS HAMILTON (05/11/2009)
It was the first home game of the season for the 1st XV, so everyone was motivated and fired up for the game. From the very start Wellington piled on the pressure, with an early try from Robbie Fergusson and conversion from Gregor McCallum. However, Hamilton then took the attack to us and only brave defending and hard tackles prevented them scoring a try. With half time approaching, we upped the pace of the game and some well worked tries gave us a 21-0 half time lead.
After half time, Wellington continued to press but good defending from Hamilton prevented us from scoring. However, the strength of the forwards and the tenacity of the back prevailed, and Blayney Smith scored his first try for the 1stXV, in the corner. This try deflated a tiring Hamilton and allowed us to score more tries to extend our lead to 45-0.
Despite finishing the game with only 14 men, we defended well and secured the 45-0 win. An excellent start to our home season.
