SUCCESS FOR RUGBY TEAMS VS COATBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL (24/09/2009)
Wellington didn\'t know what to expect, having never played Coatbridge before. But one thing was for sure: they were up for it!
When the match finally got underway Wellington piled on the pressure, and started very brightly, when with only a couple of phases played we drew first blood.
Finlay McMillan cleverly broke through the shaky Coatbridge defensive line and put the ball down for the try. Then cool as ever Keir Tennent- Bhohi smacked the ball over to make it 7-0.
When the re-start got underway Wellington made sure of their lead by getting another well-worked try. The forwards drove the ball up to the 22 metre line and then with a fantastic looping pass out to our left- hand winger, Jamie Mack, we got our second. Although Keir missed the resulting conversion, Welly were hoping we could put another few tries past Coatbridge, and we soon did.
Jonathan Iannotti sailed over the line with the best try of the first half. Robbie Miller was the assist by skillfully going past two defenders after a brilliant turnover by Robbie McAdam. Kier then converted to make it 19-0.
After some good defending from Wellington and a punt up field, Coatbridge won a lineout, but against the head Ben Turner won the ball and shipped it out to Finlay, for him to score beside the posts, for his second and Welly’s fourth. Keir converted once more.
Then a piece of brilliance by Robbie McAdam meant his solo run resulted in another try. Kier converted for the second last time in the half and the score was Wellington 33, Coatbridge 0.Wellington then scored the last of the first half, with Kier putting the ball down over the line and converting. In the most peculiar of circumstances Wellington did slip up, allowing Coatbridge to score but the resulting kick wasn’t on target.
So the Half time score was 38-5 to Welly, and we were in full control. The second half was quieter and Coatbridge got another try against the run of play when they sneaked the ball over the line from a penalty.
When Wellington eventually got back in the game, we quickly got one back as Oliver Greenall collected the ball from a line out and bundled over for the try.
Then the try of the match, when Adam MacDonald chipped the ball high over the defence and ran on to tackle the full back who had caught the ball. The ball then bounced loose and Adam decided against passing to the supporting players of Robbie Miller and Chris Rae and went over the try line for a very well deserved try of his own.
Then, to rub salt in the wound, Wellington scored for the final time with Keir going over for his second try an Wellington’s ninth of the day. Keir could only convert the try and the match was brought to an end.Final Score:
Wellington 2nd XV 55 - Coatbridge High 2nd XV 10
Man of the match: Robbie MacAdam
Coatbridge being the more physical and older team promised to give the Wellington S1/2 team a challenge. The game began with a lot of basic mistakes from both teams. “Basics!” yelled David Courtney from the sideline. Wellington were always second to the ball in the breakdowns. Slowly as the game went on Wellington picked up their game and scored 2 tries before the end of the half. Half time score: 8-4.
After an inspirational half time talk, from David Courtney, Wellington went onto the pitch a new team. Everything began to flow and click together. Passes were going where they were supposed to go and Wellington’s defensive game had a massive improvement only letting in another try in the second half and scoring 3, giving Wellington S1/2 their second win of the season and maintaining their 100% record. Final score: 20-7
Tries: Gregor Lynch, Oliver Craig(2), Sean Courtney and Mark Storm
Conversions: Oliver Craig (5)
