All teachers are aware of the social, emotional and
academic needs of each child and make best provision
for these needs at all times. To enable this to happen, it
is necessary for a teacher to use a teaching style that is
compatible with the pupil’s learning style. There will also
be a place for whole class, group, and individual teaching.
The choice of method will vary according to the activity
being undertaken and the children involved. Due to the
good teacher / pupil ratio in each class, it is usual that
teachers will have flexible groups to accommodate the
differing needs of each pupil. This takes careful planning,
but is necessary to ensure that each child is always working
on an appropriate activity.
Each Primary 1 class has the added bonus of assistance
from an Early Years practitioner several afternoons most weeks.
This gives children continuity as well as helping with the
planned activities. Mrs. Wallis and Mrs. Rimmer also assist
in classrooms, following a weekly timetable.
Small classes (a maximum of 20 pupils per class) allow
the teachers to be very aware of the social, emotional and
academic needs of each child and make best provision for
these needs at all times. Pupils are encouraged to do their
best, to have a go without fear of failure, to learn from their
mistakes and to ask for help when help is needed. Whole
class, smaller group and individual activities are carefully
planned to allow each child the opportunity to learn at their
own speed.
Learning Support, from a teacher qualified by The Dyslexia
Institute, is available to pupils with specific learning
difficulties and may last for just a couple of weeks to a
longer period of time. Parents are informed and must
give their consent before a child can receive this extra
support.
