Both music and drama play a very important role in the life of the Department. We have our own Choir who practise on
Wednesday lunchtimes and perform at the Christmas Carol Concert, the Christmas Service at St. Columba’s Church,
Ayr, the Harvest Festival Service and the Easter Service. A smaller Choir usually participates in The Ayrshire Festival
each spring. Although completely voluntary, it is not unusual to have 75%+ of the pupils in the department keen to be
in the Choir.
We also have a Junior Orchestra who practise on Tuesday lunchtimes and perform at the Christmas and Easter Services.
Individual instrumental lessons are available on a wide range of instruments with anything up to 60% of the pupils able
to play a musical instrument (though with varying degrees of skill!).
Drama is particularly strong with the whole department performing a staged production once every two years and
Primary 6 providing a show on alternate years. 2009’s whole department production, “The Evacuees”, a story from
World War Two about school children being evacuated from London before The Blitz, was by far the most demanding
show ever staged at this level but was a spectacular success and enjoyed by packed houses at both performances.
