Written homework
All pupils in P1, P2 and P3 are usually set homework on four
evenings each week. In Primary 1 homework will usually
reflect the work on literacy that is crucial. In P2 and P3
homework will usually consist of two maths tasks and two
language tasks, one task each night, although exceptions to this may be made.
Homework should be relevant to the type of work taking
place in class, and may be used to consolidate, extend and
challenge each pupil. It is expected that written homework
will be completed overnight and returned the next day. All
homework must be dated, and it will be marked with care,
with feedback given to the pupil.
Homework set should employ a pupil for 10 -15 minutes in
Primaries 1 and 2, and for 20 minutes in Primary 3. There
will be a need for differentiation in this aspect of work, as
in any other.
Reading homework
All pupils in Primary 1-3 will take home reading homework on as many
evenings as possible, including weekends, to promote
reading skills and to give parents an input into their child’s
education. This work can include word lists / boxes, reading
books, comprehension tasks or private reading. Parents
are also encouraged to add additional reading material to
a child’s bookshelf.
Each classroom has a designated Library or Book Corner.
Pupils are taught proper care of books, and encouraged to
select from the contents of the Library which are changed
regularly to provide continual stimulus.
Primary 4 is set homework for 20-25 minutes each night,
Monday to Thursday;
Primaries 5 and 6 are set homework for 25-30 minutes
each night, Monday to Thursday.
