National Curricular Guidelines
This year marks the major transition from long-standing
5-14 guidelines to implementation of A Curriculum for
Excellence. Parents will be kept informed of developments,
informally or in pre-planned meetings. Any parent wishing
information at any time need only ask.
The ethos and methodolgy of C4E is implemented in the
Infant Department, and involves pupils in active learning,
outdoor learning and consultation. These methods enhance
learning and stimulate discussion and excitement. Children
have greater ownership of their learning, and although
they may say they play all day, they are always busy and
learning all the time! Best effort, personal achievement
and a good work ethic are encouraged at all times.
The National Assessment Resource for A Curriculum for
Excellence will be published in the autumn of 2010, and
will be studied and implemented in the department at that
time.
Literacy
Literacy is the key to learning, opening up the world of
knowledge to children. With our recently implemented
synthetic phonics approach to reading, children swiftly
achieve independence in reading and writing and develop
a love of books. This teaching and learning programme
includes lots of fun -games, songs, rhyme, even painting on
occasion! Teachers are adept at personalising work to suit
the learning styles of individual children. Learning to read
and write is challenging but it is fun. Children build their
self-esteem through daily success and encouragement.
Come in and visit, the evidence is displayed upon the
walls!
Numeracy and Maths
Money, number, measure, information handling, shape,
position - these headings suggest just the tip of the
mathematical iceberg - hidden underneath them is the fun
and excitement that can be found in an infant Maths lesson.
Using the interactive board, whiteboards, games, puzzles
as well as traditional methods with pencil and paper children
show what they can already do, and are challenged to take
their learning forward. Expert at assessing each pupil’s
learning style, teachers provide stimulating challenges to
keep each pupil on track to success.
Specialist Subjects
Pupils start French in Primary 4 with a subject specialist while subject specialists also teach Art, Music, PE, Games, Swimming and ICT.
