Primaries 1 - 6 are housed in Drumley House, which is a bright and well-resourced building for two classes at each stage.  The wall display is vibrant and the atmosphere is caring and stimulating.  There is specialist teaching at every stage, and all pupils are encouraged to play a musical instrument, or join a club or a sports team.

Pupils often make visits outside school, which range from an afternoon on the Low Green to a week away at an outward bound centre.  Children work hard in classrooms as well, with programmes of work under constant review, to ensure that the needs of each individual are met.

Literacy in the Infant Department

Literacy is the key to learning, opening up the world of knowledge to children.

With our recently implemented synthetic phonics approach to reading, children swiftly achieve independence in reading and writing and develop a love of books.

Learning to read and write is challenging and it is fun.

The skills involved in the four aspects of literacy - Talking, Listening, Reading and Writing - remain the necessary skills for effective communication, not just within the school but with the outside world and the future.

From Early Level, the focus is on effective communication.  Throughout the Infant years children build on their skills in a coherent and progressive programme.

Talking to friends, to teachers and to family.
Talking about people, events and things that matter to them.

Listening to friends, to teachers, to family.
Listening to stories, music, poetry, plays.

Reading to improve skills, to enjoy, to learn.
Reading to family, to friends and to teachers.
Reading stories they have written themselves.

Writing their name.
Writing to record events.
Writing to create a story.

Each child will become an effective communicator.
