Health Promoting Nursery

The Nursery work in the area of Health Promotion has been recognised!
Mrs. Allan, Head of Nursery will present a poster presentation entitled “Health and Wellbeing Within A Curriculum for Excellence – A Partnership Approach” to the NHS Early Years Conference at Heriot-Watt University on 5th and 6th October 2010.

Health promotion is a national policy and is embedded in our practice. We recently attained the commitment award under the South Ayrshire accreditation scheme.

Health promotion is a very high priority within Wellington School Nursery and the children participate in an extremely full range of activities designed to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

At present the children are participating in the following activities:

  • Tooth brushing programme
  • “Wash Your Hands of Them” hand washing programme
  • Healthy snack choices
  • Daily outdoors and indoors physical play
  • Movement to music and swimming
  • Learning about friendships and feelings
  • Learning about people who help us in our communities
  • Road and personal safety

In order to highlight our health promoting activities to Parents we hold regular “Health and Well Being Fairs” inviting Ayrshire and Arran Health Board representatives and partners to participate. Our event in 2010 was very successful with Ged Quirk, Children’s Services Officer from South Ayrshire Council as the keynote speaker. The event was filmed and we have produced a DVD showing the good work done in Health Promotion in the Nursery. Our work has also featured in “Early Years Matters” a publication which is distributed throughout Scotland. Needless to say we are delighted!

For the start of this new session we have purchased a number of new resources for health promotion – lots of lovely balls of various sizes, colours and textures, some monster feet, feelings mirrors and a healthy eating game.

Work has started on achieving the next level award, Commended and staff have been investigating two new initiatives:

  1. Fresh Air-shire – a smoking cessation programme launched in South Ayrshire.
  2. Breastfeeding Friendly Nursery – a programme designed to provide education and training for staff to enable them to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.

The children have been working on ‘feelings’ and road safety. The tooth brushing programme is ‘up and brushing’.

A Curriculum for Excellence Early Level Health and Wellbeing Fair

A very successful Health and Wellbeing Fair was held on Thursday 25th February. Ged Quirk, Children’s Services Officer from South Ayrshire Council was the keynote speaker. The subject of his presentation was ‘The Early Years Framework’ and it was extremely informative and interesting. Many organisations from the community with an interest in Health and Wellbeing attended with displays and resources which the Parents of children working at Early Level found very informative.
