CHARITABLE STATUS
Wellington School is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status (Scottish Charity Number SC005052). Its Charitable Purpose is the Advancement of Education.
Wellington School provides Public Benefit through the provision of nursery, primary and secondary education. The curriculum reflects mainstream Scottish education from 3 to 18 with a significant focus on art, music, languages and science. Our Learning Support Department helps primary and secondary pupils with a range of learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia).
The school embraces fully the ethos of A Curriculum for Excellence in the development of the four capacities within its pupils, enabling them to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
Wellington has a very strong commitment to extracurricular education through a wide range of clubs and other activities including educational trips, music, community involvement, outdoor education, sport, debating and environmental activities. Our pupils have contributed widely at local and national level, for example in rugby, hockey, netball, swimming and athletics teams, art competitions and exhibitions, music festivals, orchestras and choirs.
The school is committed to providing access to a Wellington education to the widest possible range of pupils through the bursary programme and has increased the funding support available. Financial support is available to pupils of all ages from both within and outside the school, and all awards are means tested. A range of awards is available ranging from 10% to 100% of the school fees and, above this, additional awards (to cover items such as uniform and travel) may be made at the discretion of the school. For further information please contact the Bursar through the School Office.
The school provides access to its facilities and expertise to the local community and beyond. We have hosted coaching and refereeing courses in a range of sports, hosted artistic, musical and cultural events and activities, and hosted or participated in a variety of international conferences and activities of an educational nature (e.g. UCAPE and COMENIUS).
Wellington School contributes to teachers’ professional development in Scotland, providing places for student and probationary teachers, and providing markers, setters and scrutineers for the SQA. Our teachers contribute to curriculum development in Scotland in developing subject materials and instruments of assessment, and taking part in focus groups and national surveys. We host educational conferences and seminars, and our Nursery is in partnership with South Ayrshire Council.
Wellington School pupils of all ages directly support local, national and international charities, and provide support for the local community. The annual Sixth Year Charity is of particular significance: two years ago, the pupils raised £20,000 for National Children's Homes; last year we raised over £22,500 for Teenage Cancer Trust; and this year we hope to raise a similar amount for Leukaemia Research. Alongside this, there is other work in raising funds for the Maya School in India, a Bags2School initiative to support developing nations, and a range of active citizenship opportunities from even our youngest pupils. Many pupils undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and contribute directly through Service opportunities throughout the year. Many other senior pupils contribute through work experience in the caring professions and other areas.
